Off we go!
Last Monday (21 December); our restoration team started the process of restoration of the machines. The first step was the cleaning of the horizontal Ingersoll Rand compressor, which our technician Mohamed completed in two days.
Our scientific expert Guido explains the process. The in depth cleaning follows three stages: first, the non-adhesive paint was removed and the rust was taken off by hand with a wire brush. Afterwards, the compressor was thoroughly cleaned with soapy water. The following steps consisted in rinsing the machine with high-pressure water and then applying two layers of anti-rust coating to protect the machine and give it a glowing patina.
This treatment is inspired from the treatment used at the C-Mine in Winterslag in Belgian Limburg. If approved by the heritage authorities, this treatment will then be repeated on the other machines.
